MORE OF VIC'S ADVENTURES

Our past president, Vic Carpenter, and his wife are spending a year in Kenya, Africa, teaching.  He sends birding notes to us as time permits.  Notes from his  December 2009 email (he forgot his camera!):  “African birds in general are much more beautiful in real life than they are in the field guides.  That goes double for the Grey-crowned Crane.  I have never seen anything quite like it.  We had beautiful close views (oh, for my camera!!!), and they didn't seem to show any fear of us.  The crown on their heads just boggles my mind; they look (and act) like women parading around showing off their new hats.  (Let's say "vain women," none of whom are reading this email.)”

Past Ogeechee President Teaching in Africa

Vic Carpenter, our past president and long-time member of the Ogeechee Audubon Society, and his wife Charlotte, are spending a year in Kenya, teaching.  He is finding time to see the birds of Africa, and will be sending articles for the newsletter.  He stated he has been to the Maasai Mara National Park and truly enjoyed photographing elephants, buffalo, a rhino, hippos, a leopard, a cheetah, lions, giraffes, hyenas, a jackal, impalas, wildebeests, dik-diks, Thompson’s gazelles, Grant’s gazelles, hartebeests, and elands.

Vic sent an email on December 1, saying that the first term had ended and that he and Charlotte were going to Mombasa for a week of relaxation.  He also said that he had seen the following birds:

Beautiful Sunbird, Blackcap, Common House Martin, Yellow White-eye, Village Indigobird, African Dusky Flycatcher, Lanner Falcon, and Red-fronted Parrot.

He stated that the internet service was not reliable and it was hard to send emails.
