BIRD BANDING AT THE VISITORS' CENTER

Monday, September 27, several people had an opportunity to take part in a bird banding activity at the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge's Visitor Center.  Bander Peter Range, FWS ranger, put up the mist nets before  daylight and ran them for about 2-3 hours. While helping with the banding and in  between trips to check the nets, the observers were busy listening and looking for birds. Monday had only 2 captures--a White-eyed Vireo and a Common Yellowthroat.  I was amazed at how small the birds are in the hand,  considering what they look like through the binoculars.  The attendees took many pictures and were fascinated at the work that goes into banding the birds.  Ranger Peter Range was most accommodating to his visitors.  Those who attended were very appreciative of his efforts.  Thanks, Dot for arranging this wonderful experience.  Sandy Beasley
